SOME unscrupulous people in Kitwe have taken advantage of the high demand for chlorine following an outbreak of cholera by manufacturing fake chlorine which they are selling to unsuspecting people.
Government has warned of prosecution against anyone found wanting.
Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWSSC) managing director Steven Mwale told journalists in an interview that some people are being sold fake chlorine due to desperation in treating their water.
“Some people are taking advantage of the situation by selling fake chlorine to residents, so we are cautioning the public to be alert,” he said.
Dr Mwale said the water utility has since moved in to raise awareness on where the public can access original chlorine to prevent them from being scammed.
He said the utility is also taking time to demonstrate to the members of the public how they should be using the chlorine.
Dr Mwale also said the utility has spent about K20,000 in buying household chlorine and it is working with private firms, which are donating the product for distribution to the public.
